What Are The Differences Between PSC Motors (Permanent Split Capacitor) And CSCR Motors (Capacitor Start-Capacitor Run)?

PSC motors have a permanently connected run capacitor, which provides the motor with a constant phase shift. These motors are known for their simplicity and reliability, and they are often used in applications where constant speed is required.
PSC motor uses a capacitor in series with its auxiliary winding to create and maintain a phase difference between its two windings. This creates two magnetic field with their respective peaks and valleys differing in a way as to create a resultant rotating magnetic field. This field makes the rotor to spin.

In CSCR motor, two capacitors (one large value, usually electrolytic, and other a smaller value capacitor, in parallel to each other) are connected in series with auxiliary winding, both of which are in circuit when the motor starts. Phase difference between windings in therefore much larger and gives a very high starting torque.

Once the motor gets to near full speed, or over 70% of rated speed, the larger capacitor is switched off through the action of a centrifugal switch. Second capacitor remains in circuit to give a phase difference during running, similar to PSC motor. This design is the most efficient, and is used to get maximum and optimum performance from the motor. This is also the costliest design, due to 2 capacitors and centrifugal switch.

In between we have Capacitor Start motor, which uses an electrolytic capacitor for starting with a large torque, and the motor runs on one winding once this capacitor is switched off as above.

All three design of motor are in use depending on requirements and economy. CS and CSCR designs are used for large power motors.
